Frequently Asked Questions
When is the next PHC volunteering event? All event dates are set 90 days prior to the event day. For upcoming events, please refer to our Calendar.
Can I sign up my child to volunteer? We do not allow volunteers under the age of 18.
How can I sign up to volunteer with my company? Please refer to our corporate volunteer document for more info on volunteering with a company.
Why are there no shifts listed on the volunteer portal? We start recruitment for each event 6 weeks prior to the event. Please check back periodically for updates, or sign up for our newsletter–we will send you a reminder when volunteer registration opens.
Does PHC have volunteer opportunities in the evenings or on the weekends? No, PHC hosts 5 large-scale service events each year and has more than 700 volunteer positions at those one-day-only service events. We also have weekly shifts during regular business hours (8:30AM-5:30PM) on a rolling basis in the office. If you are interested in an in-office position, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator. Unfortunately, we can not accommodate all requests.
Can PHC accommodate a large group of volunteers? Because we need so many hands to help with each service event, we are able to accommodate larger groups at PHC events. If you are interested in bringing a large group to a PHC event (see calendar for upcoming dates), please contact us!
Can PHC create a special volunteer opportunity for our group? We have monthly Outreach Walk opportunities for groups of 10-15.
What is the dress code at PHC? We request that all volunteers dress comfortably for their volunteer shift. Many positions involve standing and walking for long periods, so please wear comfortable shoes. We do not have a space for you to keep personal belongings while volunteering at the event, so please leave all valuables at home.
Is there parking or transportation at the event? There is a parking garage under the Civic Center plaza; the entrance is on McAllister St. PHC does not validate parking for our volunteers. The event is conveniently located to public transportation; less than one block from the Civic Center MUNI/BART station as well as a number of MUNI bus lines.
Is there lunch available to volunteers at PHC? There is lunch for volunteers at each and every PHC event. Meat and vegan options available.
What time are the volunteer shifts? There are many shifts across the day. Set Up (6:30AM-10AM), Morning (8:30AM-1PM), Afternoon (12:30-4PM), Volunteer Central (7:30-12:30PM OR 12PM-3PM), and Breakdown (3-6PM)
I am a PHC participant who wants to receive services at the event, can I volunteer? We request that participants spend the morning receiving services and help out in the afternoon after they are done receiving services for the day. No one wearing a volunteer t-shirt is permitted to access services at a PHC event.
I am a provider, and I would like to bring a valuable service to a PHC event, who do I talk to? How can I register? Please contact our Logistics Coordinator.
